With a range of day walks to choose from and roughly an hour’s drive from the city, Werribee Gorge State Park is a perfect escape from the rush of the CBD. Starting from either the Quarry or Meikles Point Picnic Area, the Werribee Gorge Circuit Walk passes through box ironbark forest, rocky chenopod woodland and shrubby dry forest, all of which provide habitat for native fauna like koalas and echidnas. Walking clockwise from Meikles Point Picnic Area, it doesn’t take long before the exhilarating mission of traversing a steep rockface above the Werribee River, aided by a 50-metre cable handrail. After this and once the heartrate is high, there are a bounty of swimming options and small beaches perfect for a packed lunch before looping away from the river. On the way back to the start point, there are two lookouts (the western and eastern) showcasing spectacular views of 500-million-year-old geological features below. For the keen eye, Peregrine Falcons and platypus can be spotted.
