No matter the time of year, Walpa Gorge provides a welcome escape from the blistering heat of the central Australian desert. The trail departs the carpark due east and begins with a gradual ascent across the bare red rock earth. Subtle undulations in the land are marked with grated boardwalk crossings over the seasonal creek that flows here. Following the track into the gorge as it narrows, the sheer walls of the domed rock that tower over either side of the valley provide a shady refuge for all manner of rare plants. The walk ends at a raised platform with a framed view west, back to the desert. Best at sunset.
