This walk follows the Yarra River from the Fairfield Boathouse through Yarra Bend Park to Kew’s Flying Fox Conservation Area. As the largest bushland near Melbourne, Yarra Bend Park consists of river escarpments and open woodland, habitat for a diverse array of wildlife. Relocated from the Royal Botanical Gardens in 2003, Kew’s Grey-headed Flying Fox colony of up to 10,000 individuals permanently roost here, a sensory spectacle for the eyes, ears… and nose. After arriving at the Bellbird Picnic Area Carpark, head beyond the lookout and along the Bat Colony Nature Trail. This follows a gravel track along the riverbank through restored bushland with informative signage along the way. This walk can be extended an extra 1.5km by heading past the bat colony, crossing Yarra Boulevard, and following the path to the Wills Street park entrance. Stop and enjoy the stunning city views before circling back to Bellbird Picnic Area. This walk is recommended at sunset when the bats begin to wake up (bring binoculars).
