Pinetrees Lodge has become Australia’s first-ever certified carbon neutral hotel through the Australian Government’s Climate Active Program. Part of the Seven Peaks Walk, Pinetrees Lodge offers base accommodation for guests and has been run as a family business for over 125 years.
Before achieving certification, the lodge embarked on $5 million renovations to minimise the site’s carbon footprint by introducing solar and passive design principles, converting the majority of lights to LED, installing worm farms, compost bins and constructing an organic market garden.
These changes and others enabled the lodge to reduce power consumption by 30 per cent and water consumption by 35 per cent. What’s more, carbon emissions from all sources were audited and are offset with investments in habitat protection programs in Indonesia and Tasmania.
The Seven Peaks Walk is a hiking experience based out of Pinetrees Lodge on Lord Howe Island. This six-night, five-day guided walk covers 45 kilometres of trails and peaks climbing, with options available depending on ability and weather conditions. It’s a truly spectacular way to explore a UNESCO World Heritage-listed island, only a two-hour flight from Sydney.
